Rebuilding Your Smile's Foundation
Your jawbone features a specialized ridge of bone, known as the alveolar ridge, which surrounds and supports the roots of your teeth. The moment a tooth is extracted or lost, the surrounding jawbone no longer has a purpose. Without a tooth root to stimulate it, the bone naturally begins to shrink and flatten over time.
This shrinkage can leave the bone ridge too narrow, short, or weak to support a dental implant. A bone ridge augmentation is a procedure that rebuilds the height and width of your jawbone. By placing specialized bone grafting material into the affected area, we help stimulate your body to regrow its own bone, building a stable foundation for a future dental implant.
Many patients are surprised to learn that a bone graft does not actually stay in the mouth forever. Instead, the grafting material Dr. Haider places acts as a biological scaffold that supports new bone growth.
Over a period of four to six months, your body’s natural healing cells travel across this scaffold. As your body builds its own living bone cells, it gradually resorbs and replaces the grafting material with natural bone. Dr. Haider also places a dissolving barrier membrane over the graft, which helps keep fast-growing gum tissue from moving into the space, giving the slower-growing bone the time it needs to rebuild.
Healing after a ridge augmentation is manageable, with most patients describing the experience as similar to a tooth extraction. Any discomfort tends to be mild rather than severe, and daily routines are rarely disrupted for long.
Any localized swelling or tenderness typically peaks within 48 hours after the procedure and gradually improves from there. Basic over-the-counter medication is usually enough to keep you comfortable during this initial period.
Once your body spends a few months turning the graft into strong, dense jawbone, you will return to Dr. Haider to place your permanent dental implant. Dr. Reem will then craft a custom porcelain tooth to anchor to it, restoring your smile's strength and function.
Dr. Haider may recommend a ridge augmentation when the jawbone no longer has the width or height needed to safely support a dental implant. Common reasons include:
Teeth that have been missing for months or years give the bone plenty of time to shrink and lose its original shape.
A previous extraction that was difficult, or one involving a deep infection at the root, can leave the surrounding bone walls weakened.
Long-standing periodontitis can gradually break down the bone supporting the teeth well before those teeth are removed.
In some cases, bone loss shows up as a noticeable dip or indentation along the gumline where the jaw has lost volume.
Bone loss does not mean you have to miss out on the benefits of a permanent dental implant. Our Magnolia team provides bone augmentation procedures designed to help restore your smile’s foundation.
