Exposing the Full Potential of Your Smile
The portion of your tooth visible above the gumline is called the clinical crown. Sometimes a tooth does not expose enough of its natural crown structure because it is hidden by a deep cavity or fracture beneath the gums, or because excess gum tissue makes the tooth look shorter than it is.
As part of our periodontal care, crown lengthening is a micro-surgical procedure designed to reshape the gum tissue and underlying bone level around a tooth, exposing more of the natural tooth structure. Whether the goal is saving a damaged tooth or addressing a gummy smile, crown lengthening helps create a healthier, more balanced foundation.
Crown lengthening serves two entirely different dental needs. If a tooth breaks off near the gumline, or a deep cavity forms underneath the gums, Dr. Reem cannot securely place a dental crown or filling without enough surface area to work with. Attaching a restoration under these conditions could cause the crown to come loose or pinch the gums, leading to ongoing inflammation. To address this, Dr. Haider performs functional crown lengthening to safely expose a few extra millimeters of healthy tooth structure, giving Dr. Reem a solid, clean surface to seal your custom crown.
Other patients feel their smile looks unbalanced or gummy because their teeth appear short. In many of these cases, the teeth are already the right length; they are covered by extra gum tissue. To achieve this cosmetic goal, Dr. Haider recontours the gumline and bone levels across the front teeth, exposing more of your natural tooth length and creating a more symmetrical smile.
Decay or a fracture extends past the gumline and toward the bone, leaving too little healthy tooth structure exposed to work with safely.
Less than 2mm of tooth structure remains above the gums, which is not enough surface area to securely support a permanent crown or bridge.
A patient's smile is dominated by prominent gum tissue, and they would like a cosmetic transformation that reveals more of their natural tooth.
