Harnessing Your Body's Natural Ability to Heal
When you undergo a surgical dental procedure, such as a tooth extraction, a bone graft, or a dental implant placement, your body immediately begins a natural healing response. The faster your body can deliver healing cells to the treatment site, the smoother your recovery tends to be.
At Harmony Cosmetic Dentistry & Implants, we offer Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy. This natural treatment uses growth factors found in your own blood to support your body’s healing process. By placing a concentrated matrix of your own biological healing cells directly into a surgical site, we help support tissue regeneration and a more comfortable recovery.
In your blood are specialized cells called platelets, which carry natural growth factors, white blood cells, and healing proteins. When you get a cut, these cells help stop the bleeding and rebuild the damaged tissue.
PRF therapy involves drawing a small blood sample, spinning it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors, and placing the resulting material directly into a surgical site, such as an empty tooth socket or a bone graft.
PRF releases concentrated growth factors into the surgical site for up to two weeks after your procedure, which may help your gums and bone regenerate and seal over the area more efficiently, often with less swelling and tenderness along the way.
When a tooth is extracted, a dry socket can occur if the natural blood clot dislodges, exposing the bone underneath. Placing a PRF plug into the socket may help provide additional protection against this uncomfortable complication.
Because PRF is made from your own blood, it carries a lower risk of allergic reaction or rejection compared to synthetic materials, and it can also help support bone graft healing when used together during the same procedure.
Integrating PRF into your scheduled procedure is designed to be efficient and comfortable. Here is what you can expect during a typical PRF appointment:
At the start of your appointment, our team performs a quick blood draw, similar to a standard lab test. Most patients describe feeling only a brief pinch.
While Dr. Haider prepares the treatment area, your blood sample is spun in an in-office centrifuge, separating it into layers and concentrating the platelets and growth factors.
Dr. Haider shapes the resulting PRF material into a custom plug or a thin protective membrane, depending on the needs of your specific procedure.
The PRF material is placed into the surgical site and secured with small, dissolving stitches to help support your recovery from the start.
Preparing and placing PRF requires careful attention to detail, and at our practice, Dr. Haider, our periodontist, oversees this process. His surgical background in periodontal care allows him to prepare and position your PRF matrix to support your body’s natural healing process for a smoother, more comfortable recovery.
Please contact our practice to schedule an evaluation and find out whether PRF is right for your procedure.
